The Forest Song

“Awareness of climate change impacted the human gaze. Humanity (…), now feels trapped in an atmosphere and soils and oceans that have become potential threats. The “delight associated with terror” present in artistic practices that consider our reality as a globality, transmits the sensation of humanity's loss of control over the planet.”
Nicholas Bourriaud.

I recently visited the Fuegian territory, where I felt the ghostly presence of the Selk'nam people. More than a century ago they were almost exterminated, after having wisely coexisted with nature for millennia. I immersed myself in the forest with its fallen trunks, which take decades before becoming part of the substrate. Vital transformation occurs in nature permanently. Forest fires around the planet are part of contemporary horror. Through ceramics I try to exorcize the destruction, while the song Selk'nam resonates.

The song of the forest

Modeling clay, bringing the perception of the organic to the form, arises as a bodily need. The installation is made up of ceramic pieces of variable dimensions that represent fragments of trunks. I set out to reveal bare parts, painting from the other end, in black and tan tones at one end and in gradient towards ecru, producing a contrast effect in each of the pieces. Ash and coal. The texture of the trunks is generated from the printing of tree bark and manual carving. The pieces are arranged on a rectangular gray platform measuring 140x90cm and 25cm high, so that the installation can be seen from above and around, creating an abstract floor.
